A First Bike Designed to Make Learning to Ride Easy

The Trek Precaliber 16-inch kids' bike designed specifically for children aged 4 to 5 years old between 39 and 46 inches tall who are learning to ride for the first time. Every feature on this bike is chosen with one goal in mind - making the learning process as straightforward, safe, and encouraging as possible for both the child and the adult helping them learn.

The frame is built from lightweight aluminium - a material that makes the bike easy for a small child to handle and manoeuvre, and easy for an adult to pick up and carry when needed. Trek builds all their kids' bikes with aluminium frames for this reason, prioritising the light weight and durability that a children's bike needs to withstand the inevitable drops and bumps of learning to ride while remaining manageable for young riders.

Help them gain confidence

A hidden handle under the saddle helps you guide your child along while they gain confidence and learn to ride on two wheels.

Saddle Handle, Tool-Free Training Wheels, and Small Grips

Three features specifically address the learning-to-ride experience. The first is a hidden handle built under the saddle - designed for the adult guiding the child while they learn. The handle allows a parent or guardian to walk alongside the bike and provide support and direction without having to grip the child or the bike awkwardly. As confidence builds, the adult can release the handle gradually without the child knowing, allowing the moment of independent riding to happen naturally.

The second is tool-free training wheels that install and remove by hand without any tools required. When the child is ready to ride without training wheels, the transition can happen immediately rather than requiring a wrench and a specific time when tools are available. Making the transition easy reduces the barrier to taking that next step when the child feels ready.

The third is smaller diameter grips specifically sized for small hands. Children's hands grip most securely and comfortably on a grip diameter that matches their hand size rather than being forced to wrap around an adult-sized grip. Smaller grips give the child better control and make steering more intuitive and responsive.

Lightweight aluminum frame

All Trek kids' bikes are built with lightweight and easy-to-maneuver aluminum frames that are durable enough for whatever adventures lie ahead.

Coaster Brake - Stop by Pedalling Backwards

The Precaliber 16 uses a coaster brake - a braking system that engages when the rider pedals backwards rather than requiring the child to squeeze a handlebar brake lever. For young children who are simultaneously learning to balance, steer, and pedal, the coaster brake removes one level of mechanical complexity from the learning process. Stopping by pedalling backwards is more intuitive for many young children than locating and squeezing a brake lever, particularly in moments of surprise when a quick stop is needed.

Removable training wheels

When your little one is ready to ditch the training wheels, the only tools you’ll need are your hands.
